Quality Hay

If you’re a horse person, than you know what it’s like. One day there’s one horse in the barn, then there’s 3, then 5, and then you can’t find enough hay to feed them all. Finding quality hay in Oregon can be especially tough, even more so when you live on the coast.

The difference between us and ‘Valley Hay’

Shortly after moving to the Oregon coast, we made our first trip to the feed store. We quickly learned the term ‘valley hay’. Valley hay refers to hay grown in the Willamette valley and is usually either a Fescue, Ryegrass, or occasionally orchard blend. Valley hay is extremely efficient at delivering the horses ample fiber, which is essential to their diet, but often lack the sugars and nutrient density required for a balanced diet.

If you feed your horse’s valley hay then you probably supplement their diet with grain to deliver the other necessary nutrients. While this is fine, we were unhappy with the quality hay we could find locally and felt as though we shouldn’t have to regularly supplement. So we went searching.
